Argument

In Chicago, fame is everything, and who will be at the top. Velma Kelly ( Catherine Zeta-Jones ), a cabaret artist, arrives one night at Club Onyx late for his role, his sister (who always acted) is not with her and decides to start his single number. Places in the same club is among the spectators Roxie Hart ( Renee Zellweger ), a girl with a big ambition: to be famous at any cost. And precisely for that reason, one Fred Casely had promised him an audition at the Onyx in exchange for sex with her, which agreed Roxie. That same night, after Roxie and Fred left the place to go to her apartment, Velma is arrested by police right after his presentation.

After a month of sex with her lover Fred, Roxie believe that it is time that he can present it to one of your contacts, so she can begin her career as an artist. Surprise and Roxie are huge disappointment when she learns that Fred had no contacts in the club, in fact, Fred had posted a trombonist be Roxie to bed. To make matters worse, Casely decides not to know anything else with her and decides to cut all ties. In the midst of despair, Roxie takes a gun that was in the drawer of a cabinet room and opens fire on Fred, killing him instantly.

A few hours later, police had arrived and Roxie's husband, Amos Hart ( John C. Reilly ) was testifying. At that time, the prosecutor Harrison arrives to interrogate them both. Amos begins his account of what happened: a thief had gotten into his house while his wife was sleeping. And just at that moment he arrives and shoots him to protect his wife. Harrison, far from believing, tells you the name of the victim was Fred Casely. Amos was surprised to learn that the victim was the furniture salesman who had sold him and Roxie. Then Amos realizes his wife's infidelity, and full of anger Harrison begins to tell what really happened. Hearing the statement (Now the real) of Amos, the prosecutor immediately detained Roxie and makes them take her in jail in Cook County, where it will remain detained until his trial, in which Harrison asked for her the capital off: gallows.

Upon arriving at the prison, Roxie and a group of new convicts are placed in the custody of the Matron "Mama" Morton ( Queen Latifah ). It is quickly set which is how to get along with her in this place: reciprocity. Morton takes Roxie the "Alley of the Killer", the flag of the prison where as the name says, are all accused of murder. This is when Roxie personally Velma, who prided himself on advertising media (in this case the Redbook Magazine) were doing on his heinous crime: Velma had murdered his sister and her husband for infidelity, a few hours before their last show at the Onyx.

One night Billy Flynn, who was in a club, get a new case of a millionaire named Kitty Baxter, who had murdered her husband .

The day of judgment, Roxie Billy confesses to feeling very scare however, Billy explains that she does not have to worry because the trial is a big circus and knows how to handle the show because he is a star that circus.

After calling an eyewitness as Amos, Roxie called to testify. Roxie (in a brilliant performance) begins to despair, to the point that collapses, causing a real mess in the room.

Velma and Mama followed the events of the trial by radio, and then when the warden gives to Kelly a diary that belonged to Roxie. Which makes Velma dares to appear as a witness in the trial of Roxie. Harrison takes the statement to Velma, featuring Roxie's diary as "evidence X".

After Harrison finished with Velma, it was time for Billy to question. When it begins to push Velma and accused of perjury, she reveals that she found the diary, but someone had given her and Mama. Billy read a few pages of the newspaper and begins subtly suspicion that perhaps the prosecutor was Harrison who altered and added a few words to make it appear the newspaper guilty Roxie. To be charged, Harrison gets upset and riding a scandal between him and Flynn, which ends after a few moments with his defense.

Roxie stays in the room and heard the voice calling her husband Amos. Turning around, he sees sitting on a bench and he tells him to return with him, so they are looking after the baby together. Roxie starts teasing and tells Amos that there is no baby, it was all a lie. Amos, shattered and realizing who really Roxie, you leave the room, while Roxie stares out the window what had happened in front of the tribunal.

Some time later, Roxie begins to try his luck doing singing auditions. However, being a killer no longer help, because that had become commonplace. It is precisely Velma who is auditioning Roxie. And then to see how it fails again proposes to act together. Roxie refuses because he hates holding Velma, who replied that he was "the only business where that was not a problem."

And that's how weeks later, Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly in Chicago Theatre debut with enormous success.
